General Introduction
The Global Compact was first announced by the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in an address to The World Economic Forum on January 31, 1999. The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), the first global guiding framework for academic institutions to advance the broader cause of corporate social responsibility, was launched at the 2007 Global Compact Leaders’ Summit, held on 5-6 July at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The mission of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative is to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally.
The FAQs concerning corporate social responsibility have changed from “whether or not we should do CSR” to “how should we do CSR”. Meanwhile, there is an increasing belief that business schools should educate students to be not only capable managers, but also responsible managers. How far are we from having real, responsible corporations? Can responsibility be taught to business school students? What is the influence of east-Asian values in and out of classroom? The PRME forum allows the voices of entrepreneurs, executives, professors, and students of various communities to gather and be heard.
The theme of PRME is “Rethinking Responsible Management Education in Asia”. We hope this forum can draw attention to the importance of “responsibility” in Asian business school education and in Asian business practices.
The forum is a continuation of the successful 1st Asia Forum for UN PRME held in Seoul. As one of the earliest member school of PRME, Tsinghua will host the regional forum this year.

■ 第1回 PRMEアジアフォーラム ■
the 1st Asian Forum for PRME
“Responsible Management Education: Asian Perspective”
(Seoul, 5 November 2010) Faculty members and administrators from leading Asian business schools met today for the 1st Asian Forum of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. They called on business schools to recalibrate management education based on values and principles of human dignity, community and common good as a means to implement PRME in Asian business education.
Acknowledging the increasingly important role of Asian companies on the world stage, participants of the Forum acknowledged that academic institutions in the region have a key role to play in educating future business leaders to manage ethical, environmental and societal challenges.
The Forum provided a platform for collaboration and exchange of best practices among business school faculty and administrators. Sessions focused on collaboration between academic programs and responsible businesses, on country-specific analysis of the state of sustainability education in China, Japan and Korea, as well as on challenges and opportunities for Asian business schools in implementing PRME.
Addressing the Forum in a video message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance of educating future business leaders: “Educating future business leaders in the region will have a profound influence on the way business is done worldwide in the future. This Forum is a welcome step in putting a human face on management education.”
“The UN Global Compact and PRME have played a crucial role in bringing our attention back to the fundamental values of human communities in the business sector,” said Dr. Inwon Choue, President of Kyung Hee University. “As a human community, human rights take precedence over all other interests. As such, economic enterprises must serve people, not the other way around. As a community, we flourish and advance together, not individually.”
Approximately 300 deans, directors, faculty members and students from leading business schools and companies in China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Australia, and the U.S attended the Forum. The event was jointly organized by Kyung Hee University, the Global Compact Local Network Korea, the Institute for Peace through Commerce and the PRME Secretariat.
As a side event, the 1st Asian Youth Forum for PRME will be held on 6 November with more than 100 students from Keio University (Japan), Kookmin University (Korea) and KyungHee University (Korea).
Launched in 2007, the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) provide framework for academic institutions to advance corporate social responsibility through the incorporation of universal values into curricula and research. The PRME is coordinated by a Steering Committee constituted of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program, the European Academy for Business in Society (EABIS), the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI), Net Impact and the United Nations Global Compact.
