Agenda

The 3rd Global Forum for Responsible Management Education on 14-15 June 2012 will be the official platform for management-related Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) at both the Global Compact Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio+20. The events of both the Global Forum and Corporate Sustainability Forum will inform the proceedings and outcomes of this historic global summit.
 Marking the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Government leaders will convene the Rio+20 Earth Summit on 20-22 June to build consensus on a more sustainable course for our world, in the environmental, social and economic spheres.
 Business schools, management-related academic institutions, and universities have a unique role to train current and future generations to lead this process. However, as a global sector, management education must make considerable change to be at the forefront of innovation and progress for sustainable development. The Global Forum will provide a space to discuss and mobilise action around the questions: What is the role of management education in society for the future we want? Further, how can the Principles for Responsible Management Education facilitate individual and systemic change within higher education as the community mobilises action toward achieving the Rio+20 vision on sustainable development? UN PRME Global Forum, UN Global Compact Corporate Sustainability & UN Rio+20 Who Should Attend?

The Global Forum is designed for:
Leaders of PRME signatories and of business schools, departments of management or universities considering becoming PRME signatories;
Faculty members responsible for the implementation of the Principles;
Business representatives responsible for the selection of new talent and of business schools for executive education.

Interactive meeting methodology

Building on the positive experience from previous PRME meetings, especially the 2011 PRME Summit in Brussels, the meeting seeks to maximise interaction between participants and to agree on concrete action items/next steps. Participants will be seated at tables of approximately 10 people. Sessions will begin with a moderated panel discussion conducted in "Question & Answer" style, to be followed by round-table discussions, to be facilitated by a Discussion Leader. The session will close with presentations of outcomes of table discussions. Conference Sessions Include:

Along with the incorporation of positive case studies and stories, the three sessions aspire to answer the following respective sub-questions:
How does sustainable development affect the management education sector?
What are the external incentives (e.g. accreditation, rankings, etc.), and how can they further support the values of sustainable development and responsible management education?
What are the challenges and opportunities facing individual schools to (further) implement responsible management education and how can PRME help in this process?

General Introduction
The Global Compact was first announced by the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in an address to The World Economic Forum on January 31, 1999. The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), the first global guiding framework for academic institutions to advance the broader cause of corporate social responsibility, was launched at the 2007 Global Compact Leaders’ Summit, held on 5-6 July at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The mission of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative is to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally.

The FAQs concerning corporate social responsibility have changed from “whether or not we should do CSR” to “how should we do CSR”. Meanwhile, there is an increasing belief that business schools should educate students to be not only capable managers, but also responsible managers. How far are we from having real, responsible corporations? Can responsibility be taught to business school students? What is the influence of east-Asian values in and out of classroom? The PRME forum allows the voices of entrepreneurs, executives, professors, and students of various communities to gather and be heard.

The theme of PRME is “Rethinking Responsible Management Education in Asia”. We hope this forum can draw attention to the importance of “responsibility” in Asian business school education and in Asian business practices.

The forum is a continuation of the successful 1st Asia Forum for UN PRME held in Seoul. As one of the earliest member school of PRME, Tsinghua will host the regional forum this year.

First Asia Forum on Responsible Management Education Concludes in Seoul

(Seoul, 5 November 2010) Faculty members and administrators from leading Asian business schools met today for the 1st Asian Forum of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. They called on business schools to recalibrate management education based on values and principles of human dignity, community and common good as a means to implement PRME in Asian business education.

Acknowledging the increasingly important role of Asian companies on the world stage, participants of the Forum acknowledged that academic institutions in the region have a key role to play in educating future business leaders to manage ethical, environmental and societal challenges.

The Forum provided a platform for collaboration and exchange of best practices among business school faculty and administrators. Sessions focused on collaboration between academic programs and responsible businesses, on country-specific analysis of the state of sustainability education in China, Japan and Korea, as well as on challenges and opportunities for Asian business schools in implementing PRME.

Addressing the Forum in a video message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance of educating future business leaders: “Educating future business leaders in the region will have a profound influence on the way business is done worldwide in the future. This Forum is a welcome step in putting a human face on management education.”

“The UN Global Compact and PRME have played a crucial role in bringing our attention back to the fundamental values of human communities in the business sector,” said Dr. Inwon Choue, President of Kyung Hee University. “As a human community, human rights take precedence over all other interests. As such, economic enterprises must serve people, not the other way around. As a community, we flourish and advance together, not individually.”

Approximately 300 deans, directors, faculty members and students from leading business schools and companies in China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Australia, and the U.S attended the Forum. The event was jointly organized by Kyung Hee University, the Global Compact Local Network Korea, the Institute for Peace through Commerce and the PRME Secretariat.

As a side event, the 1st Asian Youth Forum for PRME will be held on 6 November with more than 100 students from Keio University (Japan), Kookmin University (Korea) and KyungHee University (Korea).

About the Principles for Responsible Management Education

Launched in 2007, the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) provide framework for academic institutions to advance corporate social responsibility through the incorporation of universal values into curricula and research. The PRME is coordinated by a Steering Committee constituted of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program, the European Academy for Business in Society (EABIS), the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI), Net Impact and the United Nations Global Compact.
